Often, just when everything seems like it’s going to resolve, a new twist is thrown in to make it that much harder. Woody and Buzz are both challenged along the way. Anyone can feel jealous, insecure or neglected – especially when their best friend starts hanging out with someone new. The problem at hand isn’t something that could only go wrong within toy-land. This story shows the writers’ adeptness at creating a realistic and relatable situation within a fantasy world. Suddenly the new toy replaces the old favourite. They come up with the notion that a group of toys – long time playmates of one particular kid – gains a new member at the kid’s birthday.
This idea isn’t a story yet it’s not populated by specific characters, or set in a specific place. So the writers come up with the idea that toys might be alive – running around with their own goals and agendas – while their owner’s backs are turned. Hollywood stumbles over and over in its attempt to find something that everyone will like, but that no one has ever seen before. The beginning of every screenplay is the concept. Although the Academy is not the only measure of success, the achievements of this film have propelled studios like Pixar to create animated films no longer geared towards slap-stick, but driven by relevant story, strong characters, and taut emotional themes.
Animation is very near and dear to my heart, but it is often over-looked as a genre suitable only for children.
